History begins here.

Administration

Because of the need for spacecraft to transport any military assets to an area of operation, the Systems Alliance Military is styled after the naval forces of several Earth nations, with ground forces incorporated into the naval structure as Marines. The command hierarchy merges together so that at Fleet level and above, all command officers are Naval Officers.

The commander-in-chief, the Admirals of the five Fleets, and the General of the 1st Marine Division are collectively known as the Command Chiefs or "The Admiralty", and are the military advisors to the Systems Alliance Parliament.

Alliance Fleets

The Systems Alliance owns and operates hundreds of spacecraft capable of faster-than-light travel via the Mass Relay network. All operational Alliance spacecraft carry the designation SSV: short for Systems Alliance Space Vehicle.

Alliance ships are currently organised into five Fleets, each with it's own area of operation. Those five fleets are further subdivided into Task Forces, Squadrons, or Flotillas, depending on their role and purpose. In instances where Marines are deployed alongside naval vessels, a Marine Division is considered equivalent to a Fleet Task Force.

First Fleet

Also known as the Home Fleet, the First Fleet guards the the Arcturus and Charon Relays, securing the only Mass Relay route of access to the Sol system. As such, the First Fleet is responsible for the defense of Earth from alien aggressors. It is also equipped to provide a rapid military response within hours to any world within Mass Relay range, including the planets in the Sol system.

Second Fleet

Historically, the Second Fleet was responsible for the liberation of Shanxi during the First Contact War. Vessels from the Second Fleet are currently deployed as part of a joint operation with the turians, salarians and asari to secure the Mu Relay and prevent access to the prothean ruins on Ilos.

Fifth Fleet

Also known as the Arcturus Fleet, the Fifth Fleet is a rapid response force that, through the Mass Relay nexus in the Arcturus system, is capable of deploying anywhere within three star clusters populated with human colonies. The Fifth Fleet participated in the Battle of the Citadel, and was awarded the Palladium Star by the Citadel Council in recognition of their role in saving the Citadel, and the Council.

63rd Scout Flotilla

A Task Force within the Fifth Fleet, the 63rd Scout Flotilla is a reconnaissance and patrol force consisting primarily of scout craft and frigates. The SSV Normandy was originally slated to serve with the Flotilla, prior to it's appropriation by the Special Tactics and Reconnaissance branch.

Officer Ranks

Fleet Admiral

The commander-in-chief of the Alliance Military holds the rank of Fleet Admiral. They are the senior military official in the Systems Alliance, appointed to the role by the Systems Alliance Parliament. In addition to commanding the Alliance's forces, they also serve as the senior military advisor to the Alliance government, and work closely with the MSAP for Defense.

Admiral

Each Fleet in the Systems Alliance Military is commanded by an Admiral.

Rear Admiral (General)

In naval forces, a Rear Admiral is the commander of a Task Force, Squadron, or Flotilla. The rank is represented by four bars.

In Marine forces, a General is the commander of a Marine Division, considered to be equivalent to a Task Force in the Alliance chain of command. Generals are often responsible for the garrisons protecting key Alliance colonies.

Captain (Major)

Officers with the rank of Captain are senior starship commanders. During the early days of the Alliance military, when Fleets were small and ships were routinely deployed on missions alone, all Alliance vessels were commanded by a Captain. Nowadays, it is rare for a Captain to command anything smaller than a cruiser; however, Captains have been known to command frigates if they are expected to be sent on long duration solo deployments.

In Marine forces, a Colonel is typically a Brigade commander, particularly when the Brigade is on detatched deployment within a fleet, or on a mid-sized colony.

Staff Commander

In naval forces, a Staff Commander (usually addressed as "Commander") is a senior officer, often in command of an outpost or a frigate-sized vessel.

In Marine forces, a Staff Commander is usually the officer in command of a Regiment. However, Commanders have been known to lead smaller units, particularly in special forces cases.

Lieutenant Commander

In naval forces, a Lieutenant Commander is a junior command officer. They are unlikely to have a command of their own - except perhaps small scouts and patrol craft - and are most often found serving as the Executive Officer to a Captain aboard a cruiser or dreadnaught.

In Marine forces, Lieutenant Commanders are usually either junior Regiment commanders, or senior Company commanders. They also commonly lead elite special forces and special operations teams.

Staff Lieutenant

In naval forces, a Staff Lieutenant is often a junior command officer. Aboard frigates, a Staff Lieutenant will often serve as Executive Officer; aboard cruisers and dreadnaughts, they typically serve as senior officers within their respective departments, in roles such as Senior Navigator, Senior Helmsman, and Senior Engineer.

In Marine forces, Staff Lieutenants are typically Company commanders.

First Lieutenant

A First Lieutenant is a junior officer. Barring disciplinary actions, a Second Lieutenant is automatically promoted to First Lieutenant after eighteen months in service.

Aboard a frigate, a First Lieutenant is often the senior member of their department, potentially serving as Senior Navigator, Engineer, or Helmsman; aboard a cruiser or dreadnaught, they are more likely to serve as senior bridge officers, though not necessarily the most senior in their field. In Marine forces, a First Lieutenant is typically either a Platoon commander, or the Executive Officer of a Company or Regiment.

Second Lieutenant

A Second Lieutenant is the lowest-ranked officer in the Alliance Military. Individuals who complete their Officer training at Arcturus Station enter service as a Second Lieutenant, typically as a junior bridge officer in the Alliance navy, or as an executive officer or adjutant to a senior officer in the Marines.

Enlisted Ranks

Operations Chief

An Operations Chief is the most senior Non-Commissioned Officer rate. Operations Chiefs are typically only found aboard large vessels and installations, serving as the senior enlisted crewman aboard, resposible for discipline and morale amongst the other ranks. In Marine units, Operations Chiefs usually fill a similar role in units of Brigade size or above.

Gunnery Chief

Gunnery Chiefs are veteral soldiers, and mid-level Non-Commissioned Officers. They are most commonly found leading the Marine contingents aboard Alliance frigates (in the absense of an officer), or serving as the lead enlisted soldier in Companies and Regiments.

Service Chief

A Service Chief is a junior Non-Commissioned Officer. In naval forces, Service Chiefs are often senior members of their respective departments. In Marine forces, they typically serve as the lead enlisted Marine in a Platoon. Similar to a Sergeant in other Earth militaries, Service Chiefs are sometimes referred to by the nickname "Sarge".

Serviceman, First Class (Corporal)

A senior Enlisted rate, First Class Servicemen are typically shift managers or leaders of damage control teams. In Marine forces they are referred to as a Corporal, and are usually squad leaders.

Serviceman, Second Class (Private, First Class)

A Serviceman, Second Class is usually a veteran of at least one tour of duty aboard an active starship. In the Marines they are referred to as a Private, First Class, and are line soldiers.

Serviceman, Third Class (Private)

The lowest enlisted rank, a Servicemen, Third Class is an enlisted member of the Systems Alliance who has recently finished basic training. They are usually junior members of repair teams and damage control crews. In the Marines, they are referred to as a Private, and are junior member of Marine details.
