The Shell Hutts are one of the smaller clans of the Hutt Cartel. Settling on the artificial, ring-shaped planetoid of Circumtore in antiquity, the Shell Hutts constructed repulsor-powered suits of durasteel armour, ostensibly for protection: but over time they merely became a means to facilitate the Shell Hutts' laziness. Shell Hutts are typically larger than their kin from other clans, but suffer from degenerative muscle atrophy that makes them immobile and vulnerable without their armour. The Shell Hutts used a tortoise symbol to represent themselves, a motif that was carried over into the design of their Ghtroc Industries transports.
During the Great Galactic War era, the Shell Hutts went to war with the Gejalli Kajidic, which led to the development of the A-series Assassin Droids. Built to last, those original units survived until the Clone Wars, when they were purchased from the Gree Enclave - to whom they had defected - by Count Dooku.
Centuries later, a conflict emerged between the Shell Hutts and the Rath Cartel, during the Galactic Civil War. The Ouishii leader, Ambassador Wrath, attacked the Shell Hutts not just with force of arms but also with force of economy, buying out and squeezing out the Shell Hutts from control of their corporations and businesses before striking at their leadership. Faced with a choice between a violent death and a life of poverty, the Shell Hutts chose the third option, swearing their loyalty to the Ouishii Kajidic in exchange for financial hospitality and a piece of Wrath's operation.
