Design
The Legacy-class Star Destroyer was the pure battleship of the Republic and not designed to fulfill the role of a carrier, unlike the Venator. Being best described as a battleship/command ship, the Legacy Star Destroyer was larger, more heavily armored, and carried superior firepower to anything of its time. Twelve quad heavy turbolaser turrets are placed four to the right and four to the left of the spine on the dorsal hull. Two are placed on the aft ventral hull port and starboard of the ion reactor bulge. Ten medium turbolasers and ten ion cannons are placed spread out on the starboard and port rim of the ship. Two large heavy ion cannon batteries are placed one each on the port and starboard trenches flanking the command structure. Ten heavy torpedo tubes are placed amidships on the dorsal hull. Sixty point defense lasers round out the weapons of the Legacy-class. These offer anti-fighter and anti-projectile defense.
History
Only a few Legacy vessels were commissioned by the Republic. They were used as Command and Control battleships for operations involving many Venator-class vessels. They had more fire power, but less hanger capacity. After the Clone Wars these ships were retired and put into decommissioned yards. Many were sold to private parties and to planetary defense forces. After the Emperor ordered all defense forces join the Imperial fleet, many of these ships were re-commissioned and served during the early years of the Empire. As newer ships developed, the remaining Legacy-class vessels were scrapped or sold. As with many Old Republic vessels, a few of these found their way into rebel hands.
