Backstory
Pre-Coruscant
Mei-li Yeh was born to two Chinese parents by the name of Yeh Sheng-Shing and Mulan, being the youngest of three siblings, all of whom were brothers. Together the family was raised with strict traditions and were taught secret Tao's and text's concerning their family's history and their long line of alchemy trade. Although she was taught from an early age to be a good housewife Mei-li took an obsession to her father and became his prodigal student in science and mathematics, modeling herself after the strong man. The sudden love and admiration for the science of alchemy as well as her desire to be like her father, Mulan became distant from her only daughter, jealousy embedding inside of her. Without any other option, and wanting to get back at her husband, she began to play favorites with her three sons, who were distant from their father because of his love for work. Mei-li, although hurt by her mother's actions, continued her education in alchemy and continued to grow closer to her father.
The closeknit family was breaking apart when the children began to enter their teens. The three brothers, Jun, Lok, and Liang, were attached to their mother and would barely ever leave her side, whereas Mei-li and her father would spend endless hours in their basement practicing Alchemy, expressing theories, and concocting their own spells and ideas of science and math. Mulan became disheartened when she realized her husband was spending too much time with their daughter alone and feared he was growing detached from his other family. Oblivious to the obvious trouble brewing outside of the basement, Mei-li soon found herself, at the age of 12, being sent to a boarding school in Tatooine. To this day Mei-li claims it was due to her mother's jealousy of her and the relationship with her dear father.
The seperation ended the Yeh's marriage, Mei-li learned from a letter from her brother Lok, and soon after her father committed suicide when being denied to speak and see his beloved daughter. Being an outcast due to her introversion and her nerdyness depressed and alone from her only friend, dropped out of school. Mei-li not having any money or place to live was forced to work and soon became a waitress at a local strip bar, going against all traditions she was used to. Wearing barely any clothing she was forced to come out of her shell and picked up habits of drinking from her fellow co-workers, as well as taking drugs to work without having any problems within herself. The news of her job and her actions caused more strife than ever between she and her mother and soon all contact was cut off, even from her brothers.
Having blossomed early at the tender age of 14 Mei-li met a young man by the name of Jabari Phoenix, a frequent visitor to the strip bar she waitered at, and soon began an illicit and adulterous affair hoping to gain some independence and to block out her sadness and unhappiness in her life. Having helped her kick an ugly drug and alcohol habit, the two moved in together, but the loss of her intelligence and her judgement only caused more problems for the young girl.
Jabari had turned from a loving man into a mobster and an abusive boyfriend, but without anyone to lead her in the right direction she stayed with him. To complicate matters Mei-li soon found out that she was pregnant, keeping it the only option she was ever considering, she and Jabari were soon married out of convinience, despite her bitter feelings towards him.
At the age of 15 Mei-li, who was still just a child, gave birth to a little baby girl whom she named Hana Lynn Jesimae Phoenix, after her brother's deceased sister. The two moved back to her home planet and began a life together, although Mei-li swept into a deeper depression finding strength in her baby. Jabari was a hard man to be with, beating her at random, despising her, cheating on her and such. Mei-li was forbidden to start a life for herself as well as for her daughter and was under the hard rule of her abusive husband and was to homestudy their daughter. Luckily the stress she suffered for many years was beginning to look up when she was reunited with her brother Lok Yeh, who was hired as a personal accountant for the Phoenix household and being the treasurer for his underworld mob. The reunion was well received by the two, especially when Lok began to witness the horrors Mei-li faced, as well as his little neice. Giving her money and taking care of her, Mei-li was allowed to be a better parent without the stress of being alone and being beaten if she needed money. It also helped her grow close to her brother and it allowed her daughter the chance to know her uncle.
As Mei-li grew wiser and older she realized she needed a way out of the hard relationship and was soon relieved of her horrid duties as a housewife when she was visited by a sister-in-law she never knew she had.
Having thought Jabari's sister was dead it was quite a surprise to have her standing in her home, but it wasn't a shock to see Jabari had lied to her all those years. Her hatred towards the man took a devastating turn when she was introduced to Jiro Lawson, Jesimae's friend who had accompanied them on their journey. A whirlwind romance offered her sweet sanctuary and was instantly swept off her feet by the kind and funny boy, but the happiness was short lived. The visitors, who were met with hostility almost immediately by Jabari, retaliated with justible cause and Jabari was soon murdered by Taro Lawson, Jesimae's boyfriend, after Jiro's life was almost taken.
Soon after the event, Mei-li realized her life was to only go in a downward spiral when the secret society Jabari was a part of began to plot her death, as well as her daughters. Rumors ran wild and soon Mei-li was said to have been the person to murder her husband out of lust for his money and his power. Knowing that staying on Naboo was a bad idea, fearing for her daughters life, as well as her own, she quickly got a one-way ticket to Coruscant with the aid of her brother, despite his life being put on the line for treason within the gang he worked for.
Post-Coruscant
Coruscant brought new hope to Mei-li and Hana, allowing the two to get a place of their own within the educational district of the vast city. Hana was enrolled in an elementary school where she was able to have real interaction with many children her age and of different backgrounds and ethnicity. For Mei-li it was breath of fresh air and a new life. She finished her education and graduated from Coruscant University with top honors and was hired immediately at a high school to teach science an theory.
She kept in contact with her brother, trying to regain a connection with the other two as well, but to her disappointment it was never returned. Despite the bumps she had in the road she was on the pathway to recovering and being the person she was taught to be. After a few months passed, Mei-li went back to her home on Naboo to collect her belongings that were left behind, having Lok stay with her daughter while on a mission in Coruscant. There, to her surprise, Mei-li realized that she was staying at the same hotel as her breif love interest Jiro. The reunion, although bittersweet, was at an appropriate time in her life as she began to date again. Though the two spent a few days together, even being helped with her belongings, sharing a kiss caused more harm than good, being the basis for a fight and actions between he and his girlfriend and leading to their break-up.
Mei-li, knowing when it was not really her place, knew there was no need to loiter any longer, understanding that after many months apart, the puppy love she shared with Jiro was nothing more than that, although in her heart she had always hoped of finding him again.
Mei-li returned to Coruscant, having mended her minor wounds, and continued a happy life with Hana and her brother Lok, although visits were few and far between due to his work. Although his limited visits were sad, Mei-li expanded her family by staying connected with her sister-in-law Jesimae. Growing close to her, as well as her vast family, she found her place after all those years of struggle.
However, just as quick as she was to be a part of Jesimae's life it was taken away just as fast due to her sister-in-law and her new husband Taro going to a colony in the galaxy, their reasoning unknown, but the pair was reunited after a few weeks on hiatus. In the middle of the night she received an urgent call from Jiro telling that Jesimae had been brutally attacked and might pass away. Finding a sitter, Mei-li was quickly introduced to the woman Jiro broke-up with as well as his lover Ren Wilcox, and a mutual friend Asher Perez.
Upon arriving at the colony it only brought her sadness especially while seeing Jiro with someone else in front of her, as well as her sister-in-law badly harmed, it overwhelm her. On a whim, Mei-li decided to take a walk around and, thinking it'd help calm her nerves, bummed a cigarette from a young man sitting alone at a cafe. His name was Evan Christianson and much to her delight, the two sparked a good conversation and immediately Mei-li was infatuated. During their time sitting together Mei-li spotted her brother, Lok, and a familiar counterpart, whom she later found out to be Lok's boyfriend, but learning such news was not enough, Raife Christianson was not only her new brother-in-law, but her arch enemy from her marriage with Jabari, his right-hand man.
Though the trip is allowing her to explore dating a little more and offering more time with her friends and their family, it is proving to be rather hard, especially when Raife wants to avenge his boss and lies being spread putting she and her brother at odds. Where this is to lead, nobody can tell, but Mei-li will always remain optimistic despite the dangers that are eagerly lurking on the horizon, especially while having a new friend, to whom she is easily falling for.
Important People
Throughout life Mei-li has had limited family contact, from one moment being a close family, to having no family, needless to say it is understandable as to why Mei-li loves people and tries to think the best of them. Aside from her daughter, Mei-li's contact with people is becoming a reality instead of a dream. From making friends with her co-workers, to discovering new family, and developing a close relationship with a stranger, Mei-li tries to keep people close to her.
