Wei Wu Wei's first memories as a boy are of the Jedi Temple, a Miralukan caretaker, and an ornate bowl capable of producing a clear, pure tone. When the caretaker used the bowl around him, Wei could feel the presence of those near him, get small insights into their emotional states, and sense the dimensions of a room very well. When the tone faded, his heightened senses faded to normal range. He also discovered that the humming of lightsaber blades produced the same effect.
Wei later found out this was due to an unknown anomaly with his ability to connect to the Force. The Jedi Masters referred to it as being "crippled in the Force," which later earned him the derogatory nickname "The Force Cripple" from his fellow Younglings and Padawans. He struggled with his handicap briefly before finally deciding that he was better off, since he found most Force techniques difficult to use, and enjoyed learning about lightsaber combat above all other Jedi training. He then received permission to devote himself wholly to lightsaber training.
When Wei became old enough, the Council assigned him to Jedi Master Quinlan Vos. Vos argued with the Council at first, saying Wei would only drag him down, until the Council demonstrated Wei's condition. Quick-thinking Vos began to see the usefulness of Wei's condition, and agreed to take Wei as his Padawan learner.
