Raised by farmers in a small town an allied and protectorate of the Necian League, but lying outside her officially-defined borders, Mandan Hidatsa is the illegitimate son of an unknown Necian soldier and the farmer's daughter. Not a Necian in the legal sense, Hidatsa was called upon on behalf of his family to serve in the Kompanata - a unit of non-Necian soldiers that forms part of the Necian Army.
Specifically, Hidatsa was a member of the Peltastos Auxilia, and served as a scout and skirmisher on a number of campaigns. He is particularly adept at archery, due in no small part to a childhood spent learning to hunt from his grandfather and uncle. The same taught him a great deal about wilderness survival and tracking, which provided a good basis for his military service.
Hidatsa has some moderate command of Fire magic; he is able to conjure heat and flames with his hands, but greater feats of magic are beyond him. His primary magic however is Air, which he was taught to manipulate by his grandfather. While many magic users are able to spontaneously activate their abilities, the manner in which Hidatsa learned to manipulate Air magic means that he uses music as a focus, playing different tunes in order to accomplish different effects. He is able to perform some magic without his flute, but even then he needs to whistle or hum in order to focus on what he is trying to accomplish.
Out of Character
In the Star Wars universe, Mandan Hidatsa appeared briefly in prequel threads set around the time of the Clone Wars. There, he was the younger brother of Cheyenne Hidatsa, who eventually married and became the mother of Amos Iakona.
