A long-serving member of the British military, Nathan Godfrey has served in two World Wars, in both the Army and the Navy, and in two secret intelligence agencies over the course of a career that has lasted nearly ninety years.
As one might expect of an individual with such a long and active career, Nathan posesses a mutant ability that makes his age almost impossible to determine.
History
Though originally farmers, the Godfrey family came into moderate prosperity by taking advantage of the industrial revolution. Though Nathaniel played an active role in the family business, the outbreak of the First World War saw him leave home to join the Army, with the Godfrey wealth buying entry into the military as an officer.Lieutenant Godfrey served in the trenches, and found the entire experience to be deeply unsettling. It was not the battles or death or living conditions that affected him the most, however: as a mutant with mild hydrokinetic abilities, the idea of being constantly half-submerged in the earth was something he found difficult to cope with.
Military service gave Nathaniel a sense of purpose that he had not previously posessed, however. Following the war's resolution, he left the Army and instead chose to pursue a career in the Navy.
Second World War
By the time Nathaniel became an officer in the Royal Navy, his age - according to his birth certificate - was becoming significantly higher than his apparent age. It was a side effect of his regenerative abilities; and while it was not something that Nathaniel minded in the slightest, it was enough to attract the attention of certain elements within the military. Nathan was approached by Navy Intelligence, and went on to spend the remainder of his career working with them in some capacity.By the outbreak of the Second World War, Commander Godfrey was an important member of the Navy Intelligence staff. His position saw him involved not only with naval operations, but also with units of what would eventually become the SBS, and in the deployment of British Commandos.
His status as a mutant, combined with his position in the intelligence community saw him cross paths with Marshall and Wayland Godfrey: two of his nephews who were both heavily involved with Operation Pelius.
Operation Damocles
During the Cold War, Captain Nathan Godfrey was approached by Wayland Godfrey: his nephew and by then a Colonel in the British Army. Wayland had been charged with conducting Operation Damocles, a Cold War successor to the war-time efforts of Operation Pelius. The operation was charged with protecting the United Kingdom from the threads posed by "individuals with supernatural abilities", both foreign and domestic. Damocles also recruited Captain Eric Lester; the three became it's senior officers, representing each of the three main British military services.During the early seventies, Nathan mentored young mutant recruit Walter Harriman. When Harriman was killed by Hurucan some years later, Nathan took a personal interest in protecting his children.
After thirty years of operation, Operation Damocles was effectively disbanded during a string of budget cuts: vastly reduced in size and scope, and rolled into the Security Service (MI5) as little more than an archives division. Most of it's members chose to retire - many recieving promotions and honours - but now-Admiral Nathan Godfrey elected to offer his services to MI5. With a small cadre of friends and allies, he used his position to secretly put into place a number of contingencies to protect Britain's interests from mutants in the future.
One of these contingencies was the purchase of Rudloe Manor, using funds contributed by Wayland Godfrey, Ted Harriman, and Nathan himself.
Now
When Hurucan launched an attack on Walter Harriman's family, Nathan was - due to his prior experience with the mutant in question - appointed the investigating officer on the case. Having set out a meticulous plan however, Hurucan managed to bring about the deaths of both Walter Harriman and his eldest son, Jason Harriman. While Hurucan absconded with Walter Harriman's body, Nathan was able to bring a mutant with healing powers to Jason; once revived, Nathan personally placed him in protective custody at Rudloe Manor. After the tragic death of a young mutant boy due to a Metropolitan Police blunder, Nathan was approached by the British Prime Minister to create a modern successor to Operation Damocles. However, before the new team could be officially established, a series of riots and terror actions against Britain compelled the Government into enacting a contravertial clampdown on mutants across the British Isles, and lead to the establishment of the decidedly mutant unfriendly agency, S.W.O.R.D.
Nathan continued to operate the group in secret however, calling the team by the codename Excalibur.
Powers / Abilities
Regeneration - Nathan's body has the ability to rapidly heal from any wound. Surface injuries can knit back together in seconds, while more serious trauma takes longer to heal. This ability appears to somehow be fuelled by water, with the process leaving him dehydrated; Nathan's regeneration functions considerably faster when he is submerged. It is unknown whether the ability would be able to regenerate lost limbs or revive Nathan from a mortal wound: in his own words, "I have never been stupid enough to risk finding out."
Hydrokinesis - Nathan has a limited ability to manipulate water. He only seems to be capable of affecting water that is in direct contact or close proximity to him. This ability is most often used to "pull" himself through water at high speeds, though Nathan has managed to find other uses for it in the past.
Aqua Affinity - Nathan does not have gills; despite this he is able to survive underwater indefinately, without any loss of consciousness, mental functionality, or other adverse effects (this is possibly a side effect of his other abilities).
