Leadership

Absolute military authority lay with the Commander-in-Chief: a position held by the Chief of State of the Rebel Alliance. Directly assisting was the Minister of War, who kept the Chief of State constantly apprised of military operations across the galaxy.

Since both the Chief of State and the Minister had other, political responsibilities in addition to their military duties however, a Chief of Staff was appointed to oversee the day to day operations of High Command, and to ensure that there was a ranking military figure in place at all times. As such, the Chief of Staff is one of the few senior appointments in the Alliance where an individual may not also serve on the Alliance Advisory Council, or the Alliance Cabinet.

  • Chief of Staff -

The Chief of Staff also functioned as the Chairman of the Supreme Allied Commanders: the Commanders and Directors of the key Commands within the Alliance. Originally, there were six Supreme Commanders, but restructuring to the Alliance Military in the wake of the Battle of Endor has reduced that number to four: the Alliance Fleet, Alliance SpecForce, Alliance Intelligence, and Ordnance and Supply Command. Because of the fragmented nature of the Alliance Sector Forces during the early days of the Alliance, no individual representation was given, though the Chief of Staff is largely considered the defacto Supreme Commander in that case.

Though originally considered Allied Commands, the Alliance Starfighter Corps and Alliance Support Services are now considered part of the Alliance Fleet, and are not represented by a Supreme Commander. However, the leaders of those agencies are still considered members of High Command; as is the Director of Alliance SpecOps.

Additional members of the Alliance government and military may participate in High Command meetings and briefings as is appropriate, particularly if the briefing involves a specific Fleet or Sector. Because the issues discussed often affect the worlds they represent, members of the Alliance Advisory Council are sometimes invited to participate, when appropriate.
