Originally formed as Green Squadron prior to the Battle of Yavin, the Squadron was one of the starfighter units that flew against the first Death Star. In the same way that Red Squadron later became Rogue Sqadron, the pilots of Green Squadron became Thunderbolt Squadron.
The Thunderbolts originally flew X-Wings, and as such served as escorts for escaping transports during the Battle of Hoth. Later, they served as one of the units testing the new RZ-1 A-Wing Interceptor, and in that configuration they flew during the Battle of Endor, temporarily reverting to Green Squadron in homage to the pilots that had flown against the first Death Star.
Since Endor, the Thunderbolts have served as an Interceptor squadron aboard one of the Alliance's Cruisers. They participated in the Battle of Bothawui, and were among the units that tested the new RZ-2 A-Wing Interceptor. When the Challenger was reassigned to protect The Wheel, the Thunderbolts were one of the units reassigned to assist.
Out of Character
The squadron is named in reference to a type of StarFury fighter in the Babylon 5 television series, and a type of fighter in the Macross anime. The connection with the canon Green Squadron is an afterthought, based purely on the "thunderbolt" that appears in the Green Squadron logo.
