An RZ-1 A-Wing Interceptor Squadron, the Vipers formed part of the compliment aboard the Star Destroyer Horizon, with Raptor Squadron. Aboard the Horizon, a flight from Viper Squadron was constantly kept on alert status - the "Alert Vipers" - ready to be deployed within a few moments' notice.
When Commodore Vansen Tyree, the commander of the Horizon, was reassigned to the Challenger, the Vipers were one of the units he specifically requested become part of his new ship's compliment.
