In-Character
A veteran Police Officer and life-long New Yorker, Captain Sean Pope is the current head of the Mutant Crimes Unit, a special Detective Squad created as part of the NYPD's SHIELD program. Given the sensitive nature of mutant affairs, and the degree of interaction with other bureaus inherant in the unit's function, Captain Pope's job is as much about politics and diplomacy as it is about real policing: something that he often wishes he'd known before he accepted the job.
History
Born in New York, Pope grew up as an only child on Staten Island. His mother and father were humble people - a teacher and a mechanic respectively - but while Sean has only fond memories of his upbringing, he always felt that he could make more of his life than just being an average guy. He graduated from school and went to college, eventually going on to join the United States Air Force. He had hoped to become a fighter pilot - like most Air Force hopefuls - but the aptitude tests found him more suited to a career in Intelligence. He served for fourteen years, served during the Gulf War, and for a time worked at the Pentagon.
Sean left the Air Force shortly after his divorce: Sarah had claimed that the hours Sean spent at work were one of the driving forces behind her wanting to leave, and Sean retired as a gesture to show that he would do anything for her; it wasn't until then that he discovered the affair with her high school flame that had been going on for years. Rather than return to the Air Force, Sean decided to seek alternate employment, returning home to New York and eventually enrolling at the Police Academy.
Though he began as a Police Officer out on New York's streets, he was quickly snapped up by the Detective branch of the NYPD. He worked his way up the ranks, and served with both the Major Case Squad and the Organised Crime Control Bureau over the course of his career before eventually being selected from a number of candidates to lead the Mutant Crimes Unit. Jace has been around on the site since January 2007. He knows all the things, including board lore, random trivia, and really really terrible jokes and puns.
