Biography
Felix was born in New York and lived all his life in a small apartment with his family. He has nearly always been the consummate geek; knowledgeable about all things comics, gaming, cartoons, and movies. He has a hidden love of rock and metal...which really is only hidden by the fact that his tiny social circle is more into movie and cartoon soundtracks than anything else, and overrule his votes for music when they're together.
Felix's powers manifested slowly over the course of several days until they were forcibly released by a near-fatal car crash. Felix's nervous system generates an extra type of electrical pulse, which he can use to magnetize metal (and himself, to a lesser degree). His powers are diminished after their "breakout", and he must learn to control his powers if he is to build back to that initial display.
Upon discovery of his powers, Felix sought guidance online from fellow mutants. His outlook on mutantcy has been influenced heavily by Banner Laverick, known as American Girl to the press, and the three Brotherhood mutants known as Tron, Geryon, and Boomer. Banner has tried to teach Felix patience with humans, to treat them justly and tolerate the unfriendly climate towards mutants in an effort to foster understanding and peace. The Brotherhood trio taught a strong rhetoric of mutant supremacy, teaching him the slur "mundane" and encouraging him to take up a "True Name" for himself. After much thought and a few false starts, Felix settled on Flux, a word which describes an object that is magnetized, or the lines of force in a magnetic field.
Flux's divided loyalties between Banner's outlook and the Brotherhood's philosophy clashed hard in the early spring of the current year as he foiled a robbery and was then called in for questioning upon fleeing the scene. The following altercation with Michael Stern resulted in millions of dollars of property damage and several mundane deaths, and Flux embraced the mundane view of himself as a terrorist. He currently is incarcerated at Jericho's Federal Mutant Prison in Los Santos, serving several life sentences for his crimes.
Timeline
Felix's powers manifest, and he meets with two fellow mutants, Andrew Crest and Justinian Janvrin, to talk about the consequences of his actions. Andrew extends an open invitation to Felix to join a group called Haven, and Felix considers the offer. Felix begins posting on a community blog, "The Secret Life of Super Heroes", to discuss his mutantcy with others. He considers becoming a vigilante, and briefly considers the code name "Feist", due to the way he tends to talk people to death. He quickly dismisses this code-name.
Felix begins a correspondence with a user called Technofreak, whose assertiveness Felix admires. At Technofreak's suggestion, Felix goes to a junkyard to practice his magnetic powers. After a brief encounter with another mutant, Felix figures out his powers and becomes proficient at manipulating light metal objects. He also attaches metal to his arms and legs in an attempt to figure out how he was able to magnetize objects to himself; in doing so, he accidentally repels himself over sixty feet by jumping off of a metal surface. This encourages Felix to actively pursue training himself in the use of his powers.
Felix later meets Banner Laverick, a fellow mutant and the vigilante superheroine known as the American Girl. The two find that they have much in common, and share their powers with each other.
Felix finds new confidence in himself as his powers grow and his relationship with Banner flourishes. He agrees to meet up with Technofreak, who in real life calls himself Tron, at the Galapagos Cafe. He also meets Tron's roommates Geryon and Boomer, who are a Brotherhood cell. Their meeting goes well, and Felix considers joining their team.
He continues to meet with Banner, and together they train their powers. The two declare themselves a couple. Banner is forced into attendance at Cullen's Institute for the Gifted. Felix begins to spend more and more time away from her and with the Brotherhood.
Felix foils a grocery store robbery and in the following altercation with officer Michael Stern destroys a bridge, countless vehicles, and causes several deaths and many more injuries. He is convicted of terrorism and incarcerated until a "cure" for the X-Gene can be found and forced upon him as a criminal punishment for mutants.
Flux is manipulated by Klaus Heidegger into killing a mutant girl with uncontrollable powers in late June. One month later, he escapes with the aid of the Brotherhood of Mutants.
Tropes
Much of the planning and writing of Flux has been influenced by tropes as defined by TvTropes.org. The tropes that apply to him follow.
Alliterative Name--Quadruple alliteration: Felix Franklin "Flux" Fletcher.
Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking--Flux lists his crimes in They keep the dangerous ones around back. This is also a List of Transgressions.
Chekhov's Gunman--Such was his initial purpose for being imprisoned. Drama could be created as necessary for the Jozua Clinic, Brotherhood, and the city of Los Santos by having a notorious mutant criminal escape or be used by the Clinic against Mutants or Mundanes.
Deadpan Snarker--One of his main traits.
Ironic Echo--When Geryon asks Flux about what he thinks the Brotherhood is trying to achieve in Good to see you, Brother, Flux suggests that maybe the point is that mutants are not always the monsters some mundanes make them out to be. Prison psychiatrist Katherine Sumpter would echo that with regard to herself and Klaus Heidegger in the chronologically later story, Terror.
Mercy Kill--Flux kills Rosanna Hughes in Terror to save her from the horror of her uncontrollable powers.
Puberty Superpower--Comes standard with the setting.
Something Person--During his brief vigilante career as Magnet Man.
The Dragon--Aspires to be this to Saladin.
Then Let Me Be Evil--Flux's response to Stern's accusation that he is a terrorist in The Expository Bridge.
