Zenas's mother, Tala, was kidnapped by slave traders late in her pregnancy. She went into labor aboard their ship, fearing for her son's life. An Imperial Interdictor caught the slave ship and boarded it, expecting to find rebel smugglers. Instead they freed the would-be slaves. A Stormtrooper field medic assisted Tala in birth. She named him Zenas, which means “hospitable”. The Interdictor delivered Tala and Zenas to Naalol, where Imperial aid fell short of sending them home. With no money to their names, the small family was forced to settle in and find work.
Naalol was a harsh place for young Zenas. Imperial racism prevented him from making friends. His mother's attempts to cope with the sudden lack of Togruti culture—specifically, the race's notorious need to live in large groups—resulted in her coddling the boy. Zenas became fiercely attached to and jealous of his mother, viewing her as his sole friend and ally. When Tala's attempts to make friends and find affection finally resulted in a relationship with a Human woman, Zenas ran away in a rage, reaching the Force for the first time. The boy wound up at the nearby spaceport, where he met Milek Tomberlin, a fallen Jedi who felt impotent in resisting the Empire.
Tomberlin trained the boy in the Dark Side, particularly in pyrokinesis, Force Boosting, and lightsaber combat. Zenas excelled in Form V's Shien and Djem So more than any other, and though he learned a bit of all forms, He dedicated himself only to Form V. Now, with his training complete, Zenas wanders aimlessly through the universe, occasionally searching for his mother Tala and seeking greater purpose.
Tropes
Much of the planning and writing of Zenas has been influenced by tropes as defined by TvTropes.org. The tropes that apply to him follow.
Attack Reflector--The Shien half of his Form V training.
Fight Chase Fight--Has had two; one against Estelle Russard, the other with Rossos Atrapes.
Combat Pragmatist--More so than many of my other characters.
Even Bad Men Love Their Mama—As part of his initial character hook.
Implacable Man--Exmplified in his duel with Estelle.
Ironic Name—In real life, the name “Zenas” means “hospitable”.
Laser Blade--His red lightsaber.
Neck Lift--Used to threaten Estelle Russard after their fateful duel at Kessel.
Red Eyes, Take Warning—Dark Side eyes, to be exact.
Slasher Smile--Called out by name in the duel with Estelle.
