Billy O'Neill
From TheHolo.Net Forums Wiki
A Genetics researcher in his late twenties, Doctor William O'Neill inherited a blessing and a curse in his mutant gene. In his youth his abilities freed him from numerous genetic defects, but later in life the powers ultimately led to his transformation into a modern Doctor Jekyll, plagued by his barely controllable Hyde half, Titan.
In-Character
History
When William O'Neill was young, he was diagnosed with Xeroderma Pigmentosum and Colour Blindness - two separate genetic conditions inherited by his parents. Coping with the conditions was difficult, but Billy managed somehow; at least, he did until the death of his father during his early teens. The loss of his parent was traumatic, but it had an unexpected side-effect: Billy's mutant abilities manifested, and somehow managed to cure him of both genetic conditions.
Healthy for the first time in his life, Billy was heralded as a medical marvel, but in the midsts of rising concerns about the mutant phenomenon, his miraculous recovery was covered up for his own protection. Forced to move away from his Texan home to the cold and boring suburbs of New Hampshire, Billy lived a dull and eventless life, for the most part. Academically his grades were fairly average, aside from Science, where a project in genetics captivated his imagination.
Pursuing the subject further, he went on to study Genetics at Empire State University. He graduated near the top of his class, eventually moving into a series of postgraduate programs. Billy had just completed his studies towards a Doctorate in the subject when he was believed killed in an attack on the University.
Titan
Billy was at Empire State University during the terrorist attack by Neutron. The explosion that destroyed the gymnasium and surrounding buildings, and left the area heavily irradiated for months afterwards, also reacted negatively with Billy's mutant abilities. Amplified by the radiation, his abilities activated to protect him, causing a lifesaving but monsterous mutation. Initially, Billy lost all higher brain functions, running entirely on instinct and impulse. (Titan's Curse)
Eventually he was able to calm himself sufficiently to revert to his normal appearence, but not before causing a great deal of damage. Since then, the mutation has recurred; there seems to be little or no correlation between what triggers the transformation. Billy has invested a great deal of effort into learning to control his Hyde self, but as yet his success has been minimal.
In his mutated form, Billy became known by law enforcement and tabloid newspapers alike as Titan.
Mutant Crimes Unit
Believed to have been killed in the explosion that caused his mutation, Billy lived in hiding for several months. Eventually, he was captured and detained by the Mutant Crimes Unit - a branch of the New York City Police Department.
Powers
DNA Manipulation - Aside from the initial (subconscious) manifestation of his powers to cure his genetic illnesses, Billy's ability to manipulate his genetic makeup has been fairly limited. Making alterations requires a great deal of concentration, although the process is much easier when a sample of the intended gene is made available. So far, the greatest extent of Billy's abilities has been to alter his DNA so that his roots match the colour that he dyed his hair at University.
Out Of Character
Jace has been around on the site since January 2007. He knows all the things, including board lore, random trivia, and really really terrible jokes and puns.
